Friends of the Osa: The Conservation Buyers Program
If you are interested in joining our effort to protect the Osa Peninsula’s singular biodiversity by purchasing land in the Corcovado-Matapalo biological corridor, the Conservation Buyers Program is available to guide you through the process. We assist the buyers in locating an ideal property, addressing land tenure issues, creating a mutually agreeable ecological easement, and integrating the new property into the CMC.
The effort to conserve land in a biological corridor connecting Corcovado National Park and Cabo Matapalo began in 1991, when a group of landowners joined together to establish the Osa National Wildlife Refuge. These landowners made a commitment to never develop the land comprising this refuge, and ensured the long-term protection of their land from development by adopting ecological easements.
The properties in the ONWR form the keystone of the Corcovado — Matapalo biological corridor. This corridor provides crucial habitat for wide-ranging, endangered species such as the jaguar, the tapir, and white-lipped peccary, which require large bands of undisturbed habitat. Although Corcovado Park provides a shelter for these populations, the park itself does not provide enough range to allow these species, which face constant threat from poaching and development, to flourish.
Our program operates exclusively in the Osa Peninsula and we are experts at this type of conservation. We have been building partnerships with government and landowners in this region for fifteen years The land easements used to formalize each property’s inclusion in the Corcovado-Matapalo corridor are executed through our partnership with the CEDERENA Landtrust and The Nature Conservancy. These organizations have expertise in creating and holding land conservation easements on the Osa.
